Chances are you know somebody who is suffering from Colitis, Crohn’s or some other Irritable Bowel Disorder, right? Right.
Get this… according to Healthline.com irritable bowel disorders didn’t really exist 100 years ago
Perhaps due to our neurotic tendencies around hygiene, anti-bacterial soaps and lotions, coupled with the diminishing nutrition in our foods, our guts don’t know what the heck hit them.
First off, if you don’t know too much about the differences between these disorders, I’ll offer this short and incomplete description of the differences.
Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
UC is an inflammation of the entire inner layer of the colon and remains within the colon, with no gaps between the inflamed parts and with longer remission times. It is considered not as severe as Crohn’s Disease (except maybe to someone who is suffering from it).
Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s can affect any part of the GastroIntestinal (GI) Tract, however usually targets the junction between the small intestine and the large intestine at a place called the ileum and the ileocecal valve, the valve between the small and large intestines. Crohn’s has more defined inflammatory fistulas, which can affect any layer of the GI tract, from mouth to anus, and is more sporadic and inconsistent in its presentation of inflammation.
For more information, just do an internet search for colitis vs. crohn’s disease.
Ok, now let’s dive into the Body Message perspective. You may find it interesting that UC has a tendency to present as abdominal pain on the lower left abdomen, while Crohn’s has a tendency to present on the lower right part of the abdomen.
Why do you think Colitis presents on the left, while Crohn’s presents on the right?
Let’s revisit some basics plus some more advanced stuff.
The right side of the body is considered to be connected to the more masculine energies or characteristics, while the left side of the body is more connected to the more feminine energies or characteristics. Masculine characteristics are things like, being, doing, getting, having, yang, career, creation, making an impact, finances, and relationships with men or authority figures.
Similarly, feminine characteristics tend to connect to nurturing, emotional support, creativity, fluidity, yin, social connection, gathering, receiving, sensitivity, sensuality, and relationships with women or primary caretakers.
Inflammation means there is an underlying anger (flame / fire) connected to the anatomical location of said inflammation, in this case, let’s focus on the large intestine.
Inflammation of the large intestine
The colon (large intestine) is the final part of the whole digestive system, doing its thing prior to elimination… (you know —pooping!)
The colon primarily has a couple of roles, according to Wikipedia, “Its function is to absorb body water from the matter, and then to pass useless waste material from the body… [sic]…and any remaining absorbable nutrients from the food before sending the indigestible matter to the rectum. The colon absorbs vitamins that are created by the colonic bacteria – such as vitamin K (especially important as the daily ingestion of vitamin K is not normally enough to maintain adequate blood coagulation), vitamin B12, thiamine and riboflavin.”
So, it extracts (life-giving) water and fat soluble vitamins before pushing out the poop.
The colon is the end of the journey of what nourishment we can extract from the life we are living.
What is really interesting about fat soluble vitamins is that they are useless on their own, they need others in order function and express their value. What fat soluble vitamins need are fat and bile, and bile is connected to the gall bladder.
The gall bladder connects to being in integrity with who you are and demonstrating who you are to the world. When dysfunction happens with the gall bladder, you are to look for hidden beliefs that are connected to demonstrating how you are on the outside is different from how you really feel on the inside.
In summary
If you suffered from either UC or Crohn’s, your inflammation there demonstrates the holding of beliefs connected to the idea that the life-experience (water) you have had until now is not valuable to anyone else in the world —it is ‘shit’ and holds no value outside of you.
You may find yourself compensating for this by being a real crusader for OTHER people’s agendas, dreams and desires, because your’s hold no value to the outside world.
The inflammation part of this would mean that you hold unexpressed and unhealthy anger about it and/or the origin that anger is connected to.
With UC typically presenting as pain in the left lower abdomen, you would do well to explore any hidden beliefs around anger toward a primary caregiver, woman or the inability to truly receive emotional support and nurturing.
With Crohn’s typically presenting as pain in the lower right abdomen, you would do well to explore any hidden beliefs around anger toward a primary provider, authority figure, man or the inability to generate enough power to go after your dreams and desires.
The irony is that you also need others in order to carry out your own dreams and desires, once you connect to them and start to pursue them.
